I’m a postgraduate research student in Peace and Conflict Research, focusing on conflicts in the Commonwealth of Nations. I’ll be presenting a paper at UCC at the annual conference of the Political Studies Association of Ireland (PSAI) on Oct 21 2006. While researching for my paper, I found out that Donoughmore in Co Cork has a lot to do with the island I come from, Ceylon or Sri Lanka as it’s better known. It’s an Earl of Donoughmore who was instrumental in granting Universal Suffrange for Ceylonese citizens in 1931, and his role was crucial in laying the foundation of the Ceylonese political system. So the Donoughmore Constitutional Commission of 1931 is a very important element in 20th Century Ceylonese/Sri Lankan political history. I believe that people in Donoughmore should know this,…that the name of their township takes a totally different and crucial set of connotations in another island roughly the same size as their own, in South Asia.

I took photos at the vintage festival in Donoughmore last year! If you’d like to use the photos you can, just link to the original post please.

  5. James Says:

Nice pictures Donncha - I actually saw those last year just after you posted them :)

What a pity you haven’t one single thing on the very recent trip that one of your Senior Donoughmore Citizens did for our children here in India! Don Attig and fellow ship-mate from Ballincollig, Jack Donovan(who has M.S.), spent 5 and a half weeks traversing the entire River Shannon (from the source to the sea) with their motor locked at the begining - rowing, poling and sailing only - trying to raise funds for the Trust Funds for our children here! It was covered by RTE, loads od National and International press, but not a bit on the donoughmore.com website!!! They had some scary moments I can tell you - but these lads did their best. Can’t think why, when the whole of Donooughmore knew about it, that you didn’t put a thing about it here lads?

    Hi Maureen,

You’re welcome to write the feature yourself - this site is open to contributions. It requires a once-off registration which must be approved in order to prevent spam, but then you will be able to make updates to the main page.

  8. Maureen Clark (Donoughmore, but at present in India) Says:

Got rather a bit to do right now James - thanks for the offer though! I’m sure Don could give someone a page or two to write and he’d be the best one to do it - being the one who did the trip fer us!

Could do with a bit more (say a special page) about locals - telling one story every few weeks and uploading photos of him/her - make it a REAL community website. Put church timings on here too - pics of the pubs and their owners, Bus timings…

I was so pleasantly surprised when I found the website - but a little saddened that it was erm…sorry…a little bleak. Hope to be back on the ol stamping ground myself soon - but that’s in the lap of ye gods at present. Been here for….too long and am forgetting my way back home!

  9. Sean Strand Says:

Hi-ho it looks great lads, but we can’t see too much of Donoughmore or even knockyrourke long list of flames.

Have a try to pop in some pics please?

  10. Ed Myers Says:

Any idea where I can find old photos of Donoughmore and Kilcullen Rylene from the late 1800’s or early 1900’s or if any exist?

  11. Maureen Clark Says:

Please take a look in the contribute section for important news about a pensioners second River Shannon sponsored challenge for one special boy here in India - RTE are covering the challenge and it starts on Nationwide on 6th July - after that you’d have to look on their website. Please lend Don some of your support!

    Many thanks!

    Maureen
