Broadband for Donoughmore

January 12th, 2007 by James

The Corkman newspaper carries this story, stating that broadband has finally become available in Donoughmore, thanks to the Donoughmore Broadband Action Group.

THE Donoughmore Broadband Action Group has confirmed that a broadband Internet service is now available in the area.

A local company, Cork Community Broadband, has been working closely with the local local organisation in recent months and following a period of successful testing a service is now active.

A number of customers have already been connected in recent days.

The service consists of fixed wireless access (FWA) with subscriptions from €25 per month.

How well the product performs in terms of reliability, stability, latency, etc., remains to be seen, but at €25 per month its bound to be head and shoulders above any other locally available option.

Update: My broadband was installed soon after this post - plenty of bandwidth, good ping times, and quite stable so far. A pat on the back for Cork Community Broadband!

    Hi James,
Try or at who is part of Cork Community Broadband. Always been helpful to me and did a line of sight test within 2 weeks of contacting him last year.

    Cheers,
    Paul B.

Thanks Paul, will do. How have you found the broadband so far? Is it fast/reliable?

:-) I failed the LOS test last year as the nearest wireless point was Inniscarra and John was in the process of setting up a station in Plucknane ( which is now up and running ) and I am hoping to get a bounce/relay down from around the Church… if not I have to wait until he connects another wireless point over in the Kilcullen/Rylane area… seems to take months though before Cork Community Broadband can get a commitment from a landowner to put the access in a viable location. Considering the system is run using wind power ( should never be an issues in Donoughmore ) and CCB supply everything I didn’t think it would be an issue….. Hopefully though the contention ratio should be pretty low so I would expect a pretty good service… let me know if/when you get connected…

Unlucky… I know how you feel, since I was able to pick up a bare signal from both Nova Networks in Farmer’s Cross, and (practically defying the laws of physics) from Rapid Broadband’s Bandon/Ballineen access point, but neither signal was good enough to use. With a bit of luck I might be able to get them out this time, and I would be confident of passing the LOS test, since I can see just about everything south of Nad in a 20 mile radius.

    Hi James,
Just got an update from CCB. It looks like they haven’t connected anyone yet in Donoughmore due to the recent stormy conditions but they have a list of people who are looking to be connected and they are starting over the next few weeks to connect. The one bit of good news is that it now looks they will be putting an access point as they say
“I know we have been contacted by someone who has land high on “the
mountain” that he says overlooks the Rylane side. If it is useable then
I’d hope that would cover yourself also “….
so hopefully it won’t be much longer….

Paul - we managed to get it installed, looks like a good quality service so far. Good download speeds, good ping times, and very little downtime that I’ve noticed. Thumbs up so far!

What upload and download speeds to you get.

  8. James Says:

It has been less reliable lately… a lot of packet loss at times. Supposedly 1mb/256k but it is usually less… I’ll do a test with Irish ISP Test when I get home.
